Introduction

What do you want? Whatever it is, Kayle can do it! While Kayle is most commonly played top, mid, or in the jungle, Kayle ADC isn’t actually that bad. She has a short range compared to other ADCs, but she actually has a good damage output when building crit, and also has a game-changing ult. Kayle Support also has a slow, a heal/speed up, and an ultimate that can save your stupid ADC from the worst of situations. Do you want damage? Kayle can do it! Do you want utility for your teamcomp? Kayle can do it! Do you want to passively farm? Kayle can do it!

Kayle is a special type of fighter, one who builds full attack speed and uses her ult to keep her tanky. She has one of the highest late game damage outputs, but also has decent burst during the midgame and is a lane bully in laning phase. She pushes fast, can outduel anyone and can teamfight well!

It may seem like her only weakness is an ugly model, but there’s a number of small things that most players may not understand completely against Kayle. In this guide, I’ll be teaching you to turn this angel into nothing more than a corpse.

Abilities

Passive – Adrenaline Rush

Passive – Holy Fervor

Kayle’s basic attacks and Reckoning reduce enemy champions’ armor and magic resistance, stacking up to 5 times.

Q – Infected Cleaver

Q – Reckoning

Kayle throws a ball of energy at a target enemy, dealing magic damage and slowing them.

W – Burning Agony (Toggle)

W – Divine Blessing

Kayle heals a target and speeds them up.

E – Masochism

E – Righteous Fury

For 10 seconds, Kayle’s auto attacks do extra magic damage, gain range, and do splash damage.

R – Sadism

R – Intervention

Kayle’s target is immune to all damage for a few seconds.

Our Top Counter Tips For Kayle

Playing against Kayle is all about understanding her cooldowns. Without her ultimate, she’s very susceptible to ganks and solo kills. Without her Righteous Fury, she loses a huge part of her damage.

Kayle does increasingly large damage during a sustained fight due to her passive, especially when she builds her Guinsoo’s Rageblade. Don’t take long trades with her unless you’re sure you can win.

Kayle can bait easily with her heal and ultimate, both of which can be used on friendly champions. Don’t go chasing low health targets if you fear Kayle may be around.

Kayle is hell if you’re playing a melee, low-mobility champ. She can slow you with her Q, then hit you with a barrage of attacks without you able to reach her or run away.

Your best bet against Kayle is to either wait for a gank or to play something like Singed, where you don’t have to interact with her at all.

Kayle only gets stronger as the game goes on. Be sure to try to snowball other lanes so that she can’t solo carry at 40 minutes.

Ekko

You can just jump on her constantly, and you can tank her shots and deal equal damage. Consider buying Frozen Heart. Go Fervor and build full tank.

Jax Tryndamere Counter Champion

Jax

Your Counterstrike can block each of her autoattacks, which is 90% of Kayle’s damage. Run straight at her if she starts to attack you, then use your leap to close the gap and attack her. Build Hextech Gunblade and you can heal up her harass and gain some MR with your ult.

Jax Tryndamere Counter Champion

Syndra

She can block your ultimate with her own, but you can harass her constantly by spawning balls. You outrange her and can stun her. Build Morellonomicon first.

Ryze Veigar Counter Champion

You can shield a good portion of her damage and can run her down. Kayle doesn’t do great against fast enemies. Build generic Ryze items, but consider building Frozen Heart if behind.

Introduction

Your team is ready for a teamfight. You have all your summoner spells and just finished your Luden’s Echo, so you feel really strong. Your top laner has TP, and your bot laners are both full health. Suddenly you notice the enemy team gathering around Dragon. The Infernal Dragon spews his fire over the enemies, chunking down their health bars. With a flurry of pings, your team begins to flank the enemy team on all sides.

Your top laner jumps into the fight, managing to distract the majority of the enemy team. Your jungler jumps into the Dragon pit and manages to Smite it right before it loses its last point of health. Your team cheers as you manage to clear all 4 of the enemy team players without losing a single player of your own. Suddenly you see a dagger land next to you. “Oh, F-“ is all you say before suddenly Katarina Flashes in and manages to finish off every last member of your team. “Enemy Pentakill!” says the Announcer cheerfully.

With the recent Assassin update, Katarina has been highly modified, from a brainless keyboard mashing teamfight janitor to a high-skill, carefully planning assassin, always looking for the right moment to jump in and start performing combos.

Because she’s relatively new, most players don’t understand her weaknesses. In this guide, I’ll help you turn this Sinister Blade into a kitchen knife.

Abilities

Passive – Adrenaline Rush

Passive – Voracity

Whenever an enemy champion dies within 3 seconds of Katarina damaging them, her cooldowns are reduced by 15 seconds.

Also, whenever Katarina catches a Dagger or picks one up, she spins around, dealing damage to all enemies around and greatly reducing the cooldown of Shunpo.

Q – Infected Cleaver

Q – Bouncing Blade

Katarina throws a Dagger which bounces among a few enemies, dealing damage then lands on the ground.

W – Burning Agony (Toggle)

W – Preperation

Katarina tosses a Dagger into the air at her current location and gains bonus movement speed.

E – Masochism

E – Shunpo

Katarina blinks to the target unit or Dagger. If the target is an enemy, Katarina deals magic damage.

R – Sadism

R – Death Lotus

Katarina spins in place, dealing magic damage and applying Grievous Wounds to up to 3 nearby enemy champions for 3 seconds.

Our Top Counter Tips For Katarina

Katarina is based entirely around her daggers. If you stand away from them when they land on the ground, you can avoid most of her damage.

Katarina can throw her W into the air, but when it falls on her, she’ll trigger her passive. If you see a Dagger launching into the air above her, move away.

Katarina has a lot of reset potential with her passive. If your whole team is low on health, run away.

Katarina’s ultimate is a channel. Save your stuns for when she uses that, as it can decimate your team.

Katarina’s ultimate also reduces the effectiveness of heals on each character hit by the ultimate. Heal before she casts her ult, if you’re planning on going all out

Katarina has relatively high cooldowns early game, so can’t farm well under turret. Push her during early levels under turret, so she loses CS

If the enemy Katarina is really good, she can dodge your abilities by Shunpoing to a Dagger. Fake her out by shooting your ability at her Dagger, so when she reacts, she’ll jump straight into your CC.

Champions That Counter Katarina

Jhin Counter Tips 4

Kennen

Your CC can stun Katarina while she’s ulting. Save your stun for her ult. During laning phase, buy double Doran’s Blades and harass her with your auto attacks. You can push up because she doesn’t have any CC, so by saving your E only for the case of emergency, you can just outrun her jungler. During teamfights she’ll try to wait for a good opportunity, but you’ll be initiating, so her team will be dead from your ult by the time she sees a good time to clean up. Build Abyssal Scepter first.

Pantheon Gnar Counter Champion

Jayce

You have a really strong amount of burst during the early game. Rush level 2 and try to all in her. Remember to save your E to interrupt her ult. Build Hexdrinker first.

Xerath Azir Counter Champion

Annie

Your stun and high burst are horrible for Katarina to play against. In addition, you can block a good portion of her burst with your E, if you time it correctly. Build whatever you want, but make sure that she doesn’t roam without you knowing about it.

Introduction

Kassadin has fallen quite far since his peak in Season 4, where he had a 92.9% pick-ban during NA LCS. Through a number of nerfs and reworks, he’s become just an average assassin. Back in the good old days, Kassadin was a monster. His big strength used to be mobility, back in the days before any other champions were mobile. He’d be able to chase you down, over walls and you wouldn’t be able to react. That’s no longer a huge strength, with every champion released in the past few years having some sort of dash or speedup. Unfortunately, Kassadin was somewhat left out during the recent Assassin Update, and he’s not one of the strongest assassins right now.

Kassadin is an assassin who focuses on countering mages. He has a long laning phase, but once he reaches his core item set, he has an incredibly strong power spike. He has very strong roaming ability, but a somewhat weak laning phase, which is easy to exploit.

By exploiting his laning phase, you can stop him from having an impact throughout the rest of the game, and make sure he never gets to reach his Season 4 prowess again.

Abilities

Passive – Adrenaline Rush

Passive – Void Stone

Kassadin is permanently ghosted and takes 15% reduced magic damage.

Q – Infected Cleaver

Q – Null Sphere

Kassadin fires an orb of energy at a target enemy, dealing magic damage and interrupting channeled abilities. He also gains a shield against magic damage.

W – Burning Agony (Toggle)

W – Nether Blade

PASSIVE: Kassadin’s basic attacks deal extra magic damage.

ACTIVE: Kassadin’s next basic attack gains range, deals additional magic damage, and restores mana.

E – Masochism

E – Force Pulse

Every time a champion around Kassadin, including himself, casts a spell, Kassadin gains one charge. At six charges, he can unleash magic energy in a cone, dealing magic damage and slowing all enemies.

R – Sadism

R – Riftwalk

Kassadin blinks to the target location, dealing magic damage. Every time Kassadin casts this spell, the mana cost and damage double.

Our Top Counter Tips For Kassadin

Kassadin has to walk up to the minions in order to farm, so if you’re a ranged champ, harass him with auto attacks.

Kassadin generally needs Rod of Ages in order to be able to start doing damage. Until then, harass him constantly. Once he achieves his ROA, he’ll roam often and will outdamage you.

Kassadin has a decent amount of sustained damage, through the passive on his W and the stacking on his E andult. Don’t get bursted then think he’s run out of damage.

Kassadin’s Q can interrupt channeled abilities, so if you’re playing Karthus, for example, don’t ult when he hasmana around you or he’ll stop your ult and waste the cooldown.

Kassadin is an assassin who needs to use his ult to escape situations. Stay near your team, so that if he ults in, he’lldie before he can ult out of the fight again.

Kassadin is weak vs AD characters early on, because his shield and passive are against magic damage only.

Champions That Counter Kassadin

Jhin Counter Tips 4

Annie

Your E can block tons of his damage, and you can harass him early. Build Abyssal Scepter early, and try to hitlevel 6 early in order to kill him before he can start roaming.

Pantheon Gnar Counter Champion

Brand

You can harass him pre-6 easily, because he’s quite slow without his ult. He needs to auto attack with Lich Bane in order to do a lot of damage, so wait until he’s ulted in to stun him, as he won’t be able to dodge your Q atpoint blank range. If you’re behind, you can just push waves into his turret and he won’t be able to assassinate you.

Xerath Azir Counter Champion

Xerath

Exactly the same as Brand. If you see him roaming around, then come with your ult and countergank.

Spirit Visage Diana Counter Item

Spirit Visage

Kassadin does high amounts of magic damage burst, so magic resistance and shields are a must. Iron Solari is quite strong right now, so consider asking your support to rush that. Otherwise, items like Abyssal Scepter are good against him. His laning phase isn’t that strong, so there’s no reason to rush a tank item like Banshee’s or Spirit Visage. If your team teamfights, he won’t be focusing the tank early anyways, so it’s more important for your Tank to itemize versus the other carries on his team.

Introduction

"What's a Galio" goes the old reddit meme. Galio is an older champion, but one who still has niche uses today. He's unique in the fact that he can build MR and gains AP from it, and he has an AOE taunt Ultimate that can utterly annihilate a team. His damage and shields aren't anything to scoff at, and against many AP midlaners. laning against Galio can be frustrating and even dangerous given how easy he is to gank for after six.

Abilities

Passive – Adrenaline Rush

Passive – Runic Skin

Galio gains Ability Power equal to 50% of his total Magic Resist.

Q – Infected Cleaver

Q – Resolute Smite

Resolute Smite: Galio fires a concussive blast from his eyes, slowing and dealing damage to enemies caught near the impact point.

Galio fires a concussive blast from his eyes. Enemies hit take magic damage and are slowed for for 2.5 seconds.

W – Burning Agony (Toggle)

W – Bulwark

Galio shields an ally Champion, increasing their Armor and Magic Resist, and restoring Galio's Health each time that Champion suffers damage.

Galio protects a friendly champion for 4 seconds, increasing their Armor and Magic Resist Each time the ally takes damage, Galio is healed. Bulwark heals for 20% less for each consecutive hit.

E – Masochism

E – Righteous Gust

Galio claps his wings, unleashing a gust of concussive wind that damages enemies and leaves a directional draft in its wake that increases ally Movement Speed.

Galio unleashes a gust of concussive wind that deals magic damage to enemies in its path. A directional draft then remains for 5 seconds, increasing the Movement Speed of allies following it

R – Sadism

R – Idol of Durand

Galio assumes the form of a statue, taunting nearby enemies and storing concussive energy as they attack him. Galio then bursts from his statue shell, releasing the stored energy to damage surrounding foes.

Galio channels for 2 seconds, taunting nearby foes and blocking 50% of incoming damage. After channeling, Galio deals magic damage to surrounding enemies, plus an additional 10% damage for each attack he suffered while channeling.

Our Top Counter Tips For Galio

Not playing a champion that does primarily magic damage goes a long way. Galio is a relic from a time when League still had harsher punishment for incorrect champion picks, so he still abides by many of those rules, this means he also has a harder time against champions that he wasn't made to counter.

Playing a champion with a delayed disable is a good idea against Galio. If he ults a Volibear for example with Rolling Thunder active, it'll interrupt his ultimate, which is basically most of what he offers his team.

Galio's mana costs are unforgiving. Usually if you just sustain through the lane, you'll leave him a bad position in which you can pressure him. This is even better for you if you're using a manaless champion.

Champions That Counter Galio

Riven Nasus Counter Champion

Riven

She has her own shield and a lot of damage that, while it comes out in bursts, is available often enough for her to abuse Galio. She also has her own form of hard CC and no mana gating to make her question whether or not she actually has the resources to kill Galio.

Pantheon Gnar Counter Champion

Pantheon

Much like Riven he does a lot of damage really fast, and has his own built in hard CC. Even if Galio tries to run and hide under his tower, Pantheon has the ability to very quickly effect other lanes, punishing him for being passive.

Cho’Gath Malphite Counter Champion

Fiddlesticks

Is this 2012? Fiddlesticks can cancel Galio's ultimate with two different abilites with fear or his crow. He also has really good sidelane ganks, if for some reason he's ever given the opportunity to roam, however these two should never kill each other without jungle assistance.

Corki is a marksman with a large amount of poke and decent mobility that is only strengthened when he aquires "The Package." He is a strong sieging champion with his ultimate and is still a decent duelist thanks to his machine gun and passive.

Abilities

Passive – Adrenaline Rush

Passive – Hextech Munitions

Hextech Shrapnel Shells: Corki's basic attacks are permanently modified to deal 50% AD physical damage and 50% AD magic damage.

The Package: After 8 minutes have passed, The Package is delivered to both corners of Corki's fountain, which he can pick up after channeling for 1 second. Doing so grants him one cast of Special Delivery within the next 60 seconds, as well as 40% bonus movement speed out of combat prior to the ability being cast, after which The Package goes on cooldown before being delivered again.

Q – Infected Cleaver

Q – Phosphorous Bomb

Corki launches a bomb at the target area, dealing magic damage to enemies hit. The bomb reveals the area as it travels and for 6 seconds afterwards, as well as all affected enemies.

W – Burning Agony (Toggle)

W – Valkyrie

Corki dashes to the target location, dropping bombs that leave up to 3 blazing patches along his path, depending on the distance traveled

The fire lasts for 2 seconds, dealing magic damage to enemies that remain in the area every half-second, for a maximum of 5 ticks of damage.

Special Delivery: Corki dashes to the target location with extreme speed, knocking aside all enemies he hits while leaving behind a trail that lasts 5 seconds, slowing enemies within by 90% and dealing magic damage.Casting Special Delivery instantly resets Valkyrie's cooldown.

E – Masochism

E – Gatling Gun

Corki activates his gatling gun and sprays bullets in a cone in front of him for 4 seconds, dealing equal parts physical and magic damage every quarter-second and reducing his targets' armor and magic resistance each tick, stacking up to 8 times, lingering for 2 seconds after last being damage.

R – Sadism

R – Missile Barrage

Corki stores a charge of Missile Barrage periodically, up to a maximum of 7 at once, and starts with 7 missiles every time he respawns.

Corki fires a missile in a line that explodes if it hits an enemy, dealing magic damage to nearby ones. Every third missile Corki fires is a Big One, dealing 50% additional damage and doubling its explosion range.

Our Top Counter Tips For Corki

Stand further away from Corki if you can help it, during the early game. It gives you more time to dodge his Phosphorus Bomb.

If Corki's Phosphorus Bomb is on cooldown, he's significantly less threatening than normal. You can punish him for it.

When Corki gets the package, play conservatively. You're better off giving up lane presence than allowing him to engage on you with it.

Corki is a caster, anytime one of his abilities are down, you can punish his cooldowns and put him on the back foot.

Champions That Counter Corki

Caitlyn Jhin Counter Champion

Thresh

He cancels Corki's mobility with flay and that can just lead to death way earlier than Corki needs it. Note that he does have a high skill cap, but when a Thresh player is competent, Corki's life becomes hard.

Move your axes within the minion wave and hit him. Creep block is more of a threat to Draven than Ezreal is. Even if he manages to get some hits in on you, you lifesteal a lot with just a Dorans blade, and when you come back with a vamp scepter it'll get even worse. Ezreal can never outtrade Draven while his axes are live, so he just has to sit back and pray that he doesn't allow Draven to cash in on his stacks.

Q – Infected Cleaver

Q – Mystic Shot

Ezreal fires a bolt of energy in a line, dealing physical damage to the first enemy hit, and applying on-hit effects. If Mystic Shot successfully hits an enemy, all of Ezreal's ability cooldowns are refreshed by 1.5 seconds.

W – Burning Agony (Toggle)

W – Essence Flux

Ezreal fires a wave of energy in a line, dealing magic damage to enemy champions struck, and granting all allied champions struck bonus attack speed for 5 seconds.

E – Masochism

E – Arcane Shift

Ezreal blinks to the target location, firing a homing bolt that deals magic damage to the nearest enemy.

R – Sadism

R – Trueshot Barrage

After gathering energy for 1 second, Ezreal fires an energy projectile in the target direction, dealing magic damage to enemies it passes through. Each enemy hit reduces the projectile's damage by 10%, down to a minimum 30% damage.

Our Top Counter Tips For Ezreal

Laning against Ezreal is a little easier than against a lot of champions, stand in the minions when the wave is large, and make sure to enforce lane dominance with your damage tools. He doesn't have high damage without his Mystic shot, which cannot go through minions. By the time the minion wave is getting smaller, he should be unable to zone you.

Ezreal must buy a mana item to ensure he doesn't lose his usefulness by going OOM. This item will be a tear. Use the time to takes for the tear to stack to further bully him and try and set him behind. This will keep him behind and stop him from being as useful to his team in any kind of roam or gank, because no one wants to gank for the 25% health Ezreal.

Ezreal is far weaker without access to his Arcane Shift, killing him becomes easier and he's not as mobile and even loses out on a decent portion of his damage. Use this time to finish him off or to engage on him.

Champions That Counter Ezreal

Caitlyn Jhin Counter Champion

Caitlyn

Not only can this champion stand in the minions to mitigate his damage (Like every other champion) she can hit him from there, pelting him with bullets and eventually zoning him thanks to her extreme range. Yasuo

Draven

Move your axes within the minion wave and hit him. Creep block is more of a threat to Draven than Ezreal is. Even if he manages to get some hits in on you, you lifesteal a lot with just a Dorans blade, and when you come back with a vamp scepter it'll get even worse. Ezreal can never outtrade Draven while his axes are live, so he just has to sit back and pray that he doesn't allow Draven to cash in on his stacks.

It's important for true tanks (Ex, Mundo) to note that Mystic Shot does cause Thornmail to do damage to Ezreal, so it can be a worthy pickup since his damage should be coming from his Q and basic attacks

Our Top Counter Tips For Karma

Before Karma has a respectable amount of CDR, her abilities have long cooldowns, and she is reliant on them for any sort of lane dominance. Try and play defensively early, and punish her for missing the abilities.

Karma is strong early, but falls off late, simply surviving a lane with her in it is a win, since, unless you're playing a utility champion yourself, you'll outdamage her as the game goes on.

In the botlane, Karma has a hard time against kill lanes like Blitzcrank/Lucian. You can use this information to pressure her, and alleviate the pressure against your bot lane. Every minute you're not pressured is a little less damage she does.

What support Karma does really well is poke, what Janna counters really well is poke. She'll just hit E on whoever is the most exposed target for the Karma poke, and completely negate her ability to pressure as a result.

Gnar Illaoi Counter Champion

Vel'Koz

He has a lot of damage, basically. He also outrangest Karma something serious. If he can land his E, then he's guaranteed to do more damage than she could ever hope to. His range ensures that he never really has to trade with her, and the amount of damage he can do gives him consistent kill pressure on her.

Banshee's Veil

Stacking MR is a good idea if the Karma is in the mid lane. Banshees Veil has a lot of value for obvious reasons, otherwise Mercury Treads are a good pick up for the tenacity and the Magic Resist. Regardless of the role she's in, buying a Locket of the Iron Solari or any active shield has value, since you can help counter her poke with it in sieging situations.

Introduction

Ever wanted to play against a champion that had a way out of almost any jam? Well, you're in luck, because Heimerdinger exists! Heimerdinger is a safe and fast pushing champion who opts to lane by using his own turrets which can CS for him, or defend him, though at the expense of pushing the lane endlessly. He comes equipped with hard CC attached to a skillshot and a barrage of missiles. All of his abilities become even more potent when his ultimate is active and make him a champion who's power should be respected post-6.

Abilities

Passive – Adrenaline Rush

Passive – Techmaturgical Repair Bots

Heimerdinger gives nearby allied H-28G Turrets and Champions increased Health Regeneration.

Q – Infected Cleaver

Q – H-28G Evolution Turret

Places a Turret at target location. Turret attacks prioritize Heimerdinger's targets and enemies attacking Heimerdinger. Their Health increases with Heimerdinger's level and they shut down if he moves far away. Heimerdinger generates a Turret Kit periodically and can hold multiple turret kits at once.

W – Burning Agony (Toggle)

W – Hextech Micro-rockets

Unleashes a barrage of 5 rockets that converge towards the cursor and fan out past it, rockets deal magic damage and units hit by multiple rockets take reduced damage.

E – Masochism

E – CH-2 Electron Storm Grenade

Hurls a grenade that deals Magic Damage to enemy units and slows their Movement Speed by 35% for 2 seconds. Enemies in the center of the blast are also stunned for 1.25 seconds.

R – Sadism

R – UPGRADE!!!

Makes next basic ability free and gives it bonus effects. Reactivate to cancel.

H-28Q Apex Turret: Places a Turret that deals Magic Damage with its cannon and Magic Damage with its beam for 8 seconds. It has splash damage, immunity to disables, its attacks slow targets by 25% for 2 seconds, it receives 20% of a beam charge per attack, and it doesn't count toward the Turret limit.

Hextech Rocket Swarm: Fires 4 waves of rockets that deal Magic Damage . Champions and Monsters hit by multiple rockets take reduced damage.

CH-3X Lightning Grenade: Throws a bouncing grenade that discharges three times, dealing Magic Damage. Both the stun and slow areas are larger and the slow is improved to 80%.

Our Top Counter Tips For Heimerdinger

Heimerdinger must fight on his own turrets to be effective. This means you gain a lot more value out of destroying his turrets when your minion wave comes, than you do in trying to outright trade with him.

Make sure that you stay on your toes when destroying his turrets, his other abilities are all skillshots, meaning that you can avoid them, as well as the turret beams, ensuring you retain health when removing the turrets is key to laning against Heimerdinger

Do not be afraid to smite Heimerdingers turrets as the jungler, it's a free kill on one, some gold and less presence for Heimerdinger, it also makes ganking him easier

Champions That Counter Heimerdinger

Azir Counter Tips 3

Brand

Brand is a champion that doesn't mind Heimers turrets and forces him to space them according to Brands abilities. Brand comes stacked with AOE and will destroy turrets without trouble, making Heimers life hard and his ultimate bounces from turret to turret to Heimer, making killing him more than easy for the fire mage.

Yasuo

Jayce

Very Meta and Very AOE based. Jayce can break turrets and then jump on Heimer, even with the Shock Grenade, Heimer is stuck in a bad place, and without it, Jayce just kills him over and over.

Jax Tryndamere Counter Champion

Syndra

Syndra will just throw turrets at Heimer and if he's maxing turrets then he's almost completely worthless. Another champion with pretty strong AOE abilities, except she's also very anti-heimerdinger. This matchup is probably the hardest counter matchups in the entire game.

LeBlanc Anivia Counter Champion

Cassiopeia

She'll Q spam the turrets and make his life hard. The moment that Heimer has to actually land skillshots he becomes a very bad champion, and with her easily killing his turrets, he's going to become a very bad champion, very fast. She also scales really hard, so she's going to reach the point where she matters more than he does.

You'll want to stack MR and take some sort of grievous wounds. Obviously all of his abilities do Magic Damage, so stacking MR has ridiculous amounts of value, especially is a Banshees Veil can stop you from getting stunned or Merc Treads can reduce the length of it. Grievous wounds are used to counter his passive, and it's probably not necessary to stack it, but it's good to have just in case he decides to build some sort of health regen to give his passive more value later in the game.

Introduction

Karthus is a hard scaling, immobile mage with the ability to kill after death. He has a global presence thanks to his ultimate, Requiem, which allows him to do damage to everyone on the enemy team, finishing off low health targets, or getting some early damage in before a teamfight. He has the ability to do a lot of AOE damage by simply standing near enemies with his Defile active and has soft CC and/or zoning capability with his Wall of Pain. These things make him a little more well rounded then some might expect

Abilities

Passive – Adrenaline Rush

Passive – Death Defied

Upon dying, Karthus enters a spirit form that allows him to continue casting spells for 7 seconds.

Q – Infected Cleaver

Q – Lay Waste

Creates a delayed blast at Karthus' cursor position dealing magic damage to each nearby enemy. If the blast hits only a single unit it deals double damage.

W – Burning Agony (Toggle)

W – Wall of Pain

Karthus creates a passable screen of leeching energy. Any enemy units that walk through the screen have their Movement Speed and Magic Resist reduced for a period.

E – Masochism

E – Defile

Karthus passively steals energy from his victims, gaining Mana on each kill. Alternatively, Karthus can surround himself in the souls of his prey, dealing damage to nearby enemies, but quickly draining his own Mana

R – Sadism

R – Requiem

After channeling for 3 seconds, Karthus deals magic damage to all enemy champions (regardless of distance).

Our Top Counter Tips For Karthus

A lot of Karthus usefulness comes from his ability to hit enemy champions with his ultimate, Requiem. Work to negate his ultimate with any number of shields, heals or stasis effects.

Karthus is pretty weak early, thanks to his lackluster bases. You can bully him early as a result, and even snowball yourself, if you play a volatile champion such as Zed, Leblanc or Syndra.

Requiem is a channel, which means it can be canceled. Work to keep Karthus in your sight, and try and use your hard CC to cancel his ultimate. If you don't have hard CC, just get as much damage on him as possible, it's likely that you can kill him during the channel, and still interrupt the ability

Karthus auto attacks are...Bad. He is reliant on his Q to farm and to harass people who aren't close to him. Use this to punish him, if you have mobility. Weave in and out of defile range to trade with him, and move unpredictably to avoid the Lay Waste on the way out. You'll outdamage him this way until he begins to reach the peak of his power.

Champions That Counter Karthus

Azir Counter Tips 3

Azir

Azir Outranges Karthus and prevents him from using Defile in teamfights by zoning him off with his Emperors Divide. That means that both the laning phase and post-laning phase are just a bad time for the Deathsinger

Yasuo

Yasuo

More often a top laner these days, he can still be played Mid and when he's against Karthus, it's a bad time. His mobility makes landing the Q difficult, and makes it easy for Yasuo to dodge out of the Defile after he does his damage. His flow shield can also mitigate the damage from Karthus' ultimate every now and then.

Jax Tryndamere Counter Champion

Katarina

Shunpo counters his ability to outrange her, and she's mobile enough to dodge the Lay Waste. He can't stop her ultimate because he has no hard CC, and if he plays too passively, she'll go roam somewhere else, and kill somebody, snowballing anyway

LeBlanc Anivia Counter Champion

Leblanc

If Leblanc lands an E ever, Karthus will die. She can get in, and get out, totally avoiding his Lay Waste after doing damage, and has the CC to force him to take her damage if she lands the chain. She has a strong early game, and can snowball hard by taking advantage of his weak one.

Banshee's is a must. It counters his ultimate, other sources of Magic Resist are also important. Mecury Treads are a good buy, thanks to their ability to lessen how punishing the Rylais he'll eventually buy will be. Face of the Mountain and Locket of the Iron Solari have a lot of value, since every bit of shield lowers the chance that his ultimate kills someone, and Locket giving AOE MRes is invaluable

Introduction

How is it that all Yordles in this game seem to be annoying? Teemo is the most obvious example, but other Yordles are no exception. Lulu seems like she never let’s you kill her ADC. Tristana feels like you look away for 2 seconds, and your turret is gone. And Kennen. KENNEN! What an annoying top laner. You go to farm, and he harasses you with him basic attacks. You go to kill him and he’s great at brawls, with her stuns and high damage. You try to farm under turret and his Q still harasses you. You try to gank him and he just zooms away. What can you do? In midgame he has high damage and utility. You could choose another mage to counter him but… you’re a top laner.

Abilities

Passive – Adrenaline Rush

Passive – Mark of the Storm

Enemies hit by Kennen’s abilities gain a Mark of the Storm for 6 seconds. At 3 stacks, the marks consume themselves to stun the target for 1.25 seconds.

Q – Infected Cleaver

Q – Thundering Shuriken

Kennen throws a charged shuriken in a line in front of him, dealing magic damage to the first enemy it hits.

W – Burning Agony (Toggle)

W – Electrical Surge

Passive: Every 5 auto attacks, Kennen’s basic attack is empowered, dealing extra magic damage and applying a Mark of the Storm

Active: Kennen sends out a surge of electricity to all enemies afflicted by Mark of the Storm, dealing damage.

E – Masochism

E – Lightning Rush

Kennen turns into a ball of electricity, moving faster and gaining bonus armor and magic resistance. He can’t use basic attacks while in the ball, but can use spells. All enemies he touches take damage and have a Mark of the Storm stack applied.

R – Sadism

R – Slicing Maelstrom

All enemies nearby take magic damage every 0.5 seconds for 3 seconds.

Our Top Counter Tips For Kennen

Doran’s Shield can help block a lot of the basic attack harass Kennen will do in lane.

Kennen has troubles with champions who have a knockback (Lee Sin, Tristana), as he needs to get into the middleof the fight to use his ultimate.

Step away from him when he has lightning around his hand, that’s the particle effect for his enhanced attack.

If you have a Mark of the Storm, be wary. He can get free damage by his electrical surge.

Mundo is strongest in the midgame. During lategame, he doesn’t do great damage and during early game his health costs make casting spells painful.

Kennen needs to use his abilities to push in the wave, so if you have someone who can push fast, go ahead and force him to farm under turret. Do this especially if you see the jungler somewhere else, because you can then teleport. If Kennen teleports, he loses a wave of farm.

Champions That Counter Kennen

Garen Cho’Gath Counter Champion

Jayce

If you can leap to him, he’s dead. Kennen doesn’t do well when enemy champions are close to him. Youhave good poke and good burst damage. In the midgame, you can poke him down so that when he initiates, he’slow on health. Build manamune first, but consider buying a hexdrinker if the lane is a little difficult.

Graves

Graves

You’re ranged as well, so you don’t get harassed by him. In lane, you can probably kill him just due to your higher burst at early levels. In the midgame however, he’s going to have a level of utility that means that you either have to push top hard or carry hard. Push him in constantly, but keep your bushes warded well.

Trundle Dr Mundo Counter Champion

Lissandra

You’re a top lane mage, which is a huge counter to Kennen. You can trade evenly, but you can ult him so that he can’t jump into your team and ult. This is a skill matchup. Build Abyssal if you’re losing, Rod of the Ages if you two are trading evenly.

Gnar Illaoi Counter Champion

Gnar

In your ranged form, you can chase Kennen down, and in your Mega form, you can CC lock him. Build Spirit Visage first.
