Introduction

This guy. This guy right here. He’s pretty much the demon of League of Legends, and a fed one can actually be that scary. If he’s played right, he can jump into a whole team and wreak havoc.

He’s a strong laner with ridiculous sustain, and can be incredibly hard to handle. But not for you, not for your team, that’s why you’re here: to put this winged freak back in his place. Well, have no fear, here’s all you need to know how to beat this clown.

Abilities

Aatrox Blood Well

Passive - Blood Well

Aatrox’s bread and butter. When it’s available, he’ll come back to life after you murder him.

Aatrox Dark Flight

Q - Dark Flight

Aatrox jumps up and tries to land on your face to knock you up. Jerk.

Aatrox Blood Thirst

W - Blood Thirst/Blood Price

Aatrox either heals himself for way too much, or hurts himself and you way too much.

Aatrox Blades of Torment

E - Blades of Torment

A long range, cone-shaped slow that can be ridiculously hard to hit.

Aatrox Massacre

R - Massacre

Aatrox gains some range (broken), damage (more broken), and attack speed (triple broken).

Our Top Counter Tips for Aatrox

If you kill him when his Blood Well is low on juice, he’ll revive with much lower health.

His Dark Flight is easy to dodge, just avoid the centre of it and you can tear his face up.

His E is pretty telegraphed, making it easy to dodge as well. You just have to watch for the animation.

Nearly all of his damage is from auto attacks. Items like Frozen Heart and Ninja Tabi will significantly lower his damage output.

At level 3, you win all-ins and trades. This is pretty much a faceroll lane, no real tips required.

Maokai Aatrox Counter Champion

Maokai

Maokai wins simply because of his utility in a team fight. At level 4 and 5 you’ll begin to win trades, just play safe and avoid him until then.

Swain Anhi Counter Champion

Swain

Might be rough until level 6, but once you get there you sit on top of him and win. Avoid him early, make sure to dodge his poke.

Jax Aatrox Counter Champion

Jax

Turn on your dodge, then right click on Aatrox. If you hit Q and W once in awhile, you’ll get all kinds of free gold from killing him.

Fiora Aatrox Counter Champion

Fiora

Just be sure to Parry his Dark Flight. Even if you don’t, it’s likely that he can’t out trade you, so just push him off his creeps and you’ll be fine. 

Note: Most of the meta top lane champions do very well against this guy, as they’re all innately tanky and very good at trading. As long as you can avoid getting dove on while you’re low, you should be in pretty good shape.

Top and Jungle meta is pretty stale at the moment. Carry junglers are very prevalent, and really only their choice of boots can be put towards fighting this flying jerk. Ninja Tabi will be a ridiculously big help against him. Of course, if you’re playing a tank…

Frozen Heart wrecks this guy. He’s all about attacking quickly, and FH stops that. -15% attack speed is pretty huge, and then you get to add in all that delicious armour and cooldown reduction on top of that. A very solid buy if you find yourself getting pressured by him.
